When to use 从来不, 从来没...过 and 从不 for “Never”
从来 goes before the verb and covers all the time from the past up to now. It is usually followed by 不 or 没: 从来不 + verb describes a habit or attitude, something a person never does (我从来不喝咖啡); 从来没(有) + verb + 过 describes experience, something that has never happened (我从来没去过上海). 从 is a shorter, slightly more written form that only appears as 从不 and 从没: 他从不迟到.
我从来不喝咖啡,喝了晚上睡不着。
I never drink coffee; if I do, I can’t sleep at night.
他每天都很准时,从不迟到。
He is always on time and is never late.
这种事我以前从来没听说过。
I had never heard of anything like this before.
爷爷从来不坐电梯,每天都走楼梯。
Grandpa never takes the lift; he walks up the stairs every day.
Pièges courants
- Don’t use 从来 for the future: say 我以后不会再去了, not 我以后从来不去.
- With 过 at the end, the negative must be 没: 从来没去过, not 从来不去过.
- 从 alone is only used this way before 不 or 没: 从不 and 从没, not 从喜欢.
