A 大 B 三岁 for “Three Years Older Than”

Structure

A + 大 / 小 / 高 / 矮 / 早 / 晚 + B + number + measure word

Instead of A 比 B 大三岁, you can put B right after the adjective and the amount at the end: 我哥哥大我三岁. This short form works with only a few one-syllable adjectives, mainly 大, 小, 高, 矮, 早 and 晚, and the amount must be stated.

我哥哥大我三岁。

When to use A 大 B 三岁 for “Three Years Older Than”

Order: A + adjective + B + number + measure word. 我哥哥大我三岁 “my brother is three years older than me,” 他高我半个头 “he is half a head taller than me.” With 早 and 晚, a verb follows the amount: 我早他一年毕业 “I graduated a year earlier than him,” 他晚我十分钟到学校.

她小我两岁，是我妹妹的同学。

She is two years younger than me and is my little sister’s classmate.

他高我半个头。

He is half a head taller than me.

我早他一年毕业。

I graduated a year earlier than him.

他晚我十分钟到学校。

He got to school ten minutes after me.

Don’t use the short form with most adjectives: 这件比那件贵五十块, not 这件贵那件五十块.
Don’t combine the two forms: 他比我大三岁 or 他大我三岁, not 他比大我三岁.
