When to use Formal Pronouns 彼此, 如此 and 本
彼此 means “each other”: it goes before the verb like 互相 (彼此帮助), but it can also be the object (了解彼此). 如此 means “like this” or “so” and is the written form of 这样 or 这么: 如此美丽 “so beautiful”, 原来如此 “so that’s how it is”. 本 means “this” or “our own” and goes straight before the noun without 个: 本店 “this shop”, 本周 “this week”.
他们彼此认识很多年了。
They have known each other for many years.

So that’s how it is!

Pièges courants
- Say 我们了解彼此 or 我们互相了解, not 我们了解互相: 互相 only goes before a verb, while 彼此 can also be the object.
- Write 本学期 or 这个学期, not 本个学期: 本 goes straight before the noun and never takes 个.
- Don’t say 你的猫如此可爱 to a friend: in casual speech use 这么; keep 如此 for writing and set phrases like 原来如此.
