人家 for “Others”, “He or She” and “Me”

Understand the three everyday uses of the pronoun 人家: other people, a specific person everyone knows about, and a playful way to say “me”.

Structure

人家 = others / a known third person / “me” (playful)

人家 points away from the listener: to other people, to someone you both know, or playfully back to the speaker.

人家都走了,我们也走吧。

When to use 人家 for “Others”, “He or She” and “Me”

人家 (rénjia, with a light second syllable) is a colloquial pronoun with three uses. Most often it means “other people”, like 别人: 人家都走了. It can also point to a specific person both speakers already know about, meaning “he, she, they”: 人家已经说了不去. And in playful or coy speech, it can mean the speaker, “me”: 人家等你半天了. Context tells you which one is meant.

人家已经说了不去,你就别再问了。

She’s already said she isn’t going, so stop asking.

人家等你半天了,你怎么才来?

I’ve been waiting for you forever. Why are you only getting here now? (playful “me”)

你看人家小王,每天都来得最早。

Look at Xiao Wang: he’s always the first to arrive.

这是人家的东西,别乱动。

This belongs to someone else; don’t touch it.

Pièges courants

  • Don’t use 人家 for “me” with a teacher or in formal situations; it sounds coy. Say 我已经交作业了, not 人家已经交作业了.
  • Don’t add 们: 人家 already covers more than one person, so say 人家都走了, not 人家们都走了.
  • The pronoun is rénjia with a light second syllable; rénjiā with a full tone is “household”, as in 十几户人家.
