Measure Words 串, 滴, 枝, 扇, 卷 and 番

Count keys, drops, flowers, doors, rolls and book volumes with the right measure word, and use 一番 for an action done with real effort.

Structure

number + 串 / 滴 / 枝 / 扇 / 卷 + noun; verb + 了 + 一番

Pick the measure word by shape (a string, a drop, a stem, a panel, a roll), and use 一番 when an action took real effort.

请把那扇窗户关上。

When to use Measure Words 串, 滴, 枝, 扇, 卷 and 番

Like 个 or 本, these measure words go between a number (or 这 / 那) and the noun, and each one is chosen by the thing’s shape: 串 for things joined or hanging together (一串钥匙, 一串葡萄), 滴 for drops (一滴水), 枝 for a flower on its stem or a branch (一枝花), 扇 (shàn) for doors and windows (一扇门), and 卷 for rolls (一卷纸, read juǎn) or book volumes (第一卷, read juàn). 番 is different: it counts an action, not a thing, and comes after the verb: 打扫了一番.

跑了这么久,他一滴水也没喝。

He ran for so long without drinking a single drop of water.

卫生间没有纸了,再拿一卷吧。

There’s no toilet paper left in the bathroom; grab another roll.

Pièges courants

  • The measure word 扇 is shàn: 一扇门 is yī shàn mén. shān is the verb “to fan”.
  • 卷 is juǎn for rolls (一卷纸) but juàn for book volumes: read 第一卷 as dì yī juàn.
  • Use 次 to count times: 我去过三次北京, not 我去过三番北京; 番 is for one thorough round, as in 研究了一番.
