假如...,(就)... for “Suppose” and “If”

假如 means “if, suppose” and is a little more formal than 如果; it is good for imagined situations like 假如你是校长.

Structure

假如 introduces a supposed or imagined condition, and the second clause gives the result, often with 就 after its subject. It works like 如果 but sounds a little more formal, and it is especially common for imagining unreal situations: 假如你是校长,你会怎么做?

When to use 假如...,(就)... for “Suppose” and “If”

假如 starts the first clause and gives the condition. The second clause gives the result; 就 goes after the subject of that clause and before the verb: 假如明天下雨,运动会就改到下周. 就 can be left out, especially when the result is a question or uses 会, 要 or 请. 的话 can be added at the end of the condition: 假如时间来得及的话.

If I had a month’s holiday, I would travel all over the place.

If you were the principal, what would you do?

Suppose there were no mobile phones: what would our lives be like?

If you have any difficulties, just tell us.

Pièges courants

  • Put 就 after the subject of the result clause: 假如明天下雨,我们就在家, not 就我们在家.
  • 假如 is slightly formal; in casual talk 要是 or 如果 is more natural.
  • For a bad event you hope won’t happen, 万一 fits better than 假如.
