正在 vs 在 vs 着
Use 正在, 在, and 着 for actions in progress with examples and a cloze drill.
正在 and 在 mark actions in progress, while 着 sits after a verb to show a state that continues. Use them to make your Chinese sound live and in-motion instead of static.
正在 — emphasize the ongoing action
Place 正在 before the verb to stress that something is happening right now. Structure: subject + 正在 + verb (object).
Example: 他现在正在看书。 — “He is reading right now.”
在 — a lighter in-progress marker
在 before the verb also marks an action in progress, with a slightly lighter emphasis. Structure: subject + 在 + verb (object).
Example: 我还在等你呢。 — “I'm still waiting for you.”
Example: 老师已经在讲课,请安静。 — “The teacher is already teaching; please be quiet.”
着 — show a state that continues
着 follows a verb to show the result or state is ongoing. Structure: verb + 着 + (rest of the sentence).
Example: 门开着,快进来。 — “The door is open; come in.”
