When to use 除了 for “Except”

除了 can mean “except for” or “besides,” depending on the rest of the sentence. The following adverbs decide whether the item is excluded or included.

除了中文以外，她也学日语。

Besides Chinese, she also studies Japanese.

除了这本书，其他书我都看过。

Except for this book, I have read all the others.

除了咖啡，我什么都不喝。

Except for coffee, I drink nothing.

除了工作，他还喜欢运动。

Besides work, he also likes exercise.

Common traps

  • 除了 can mean except or besides; check 都, 也, and 还.
  • 以外 is often optional but helpful in longer sentences.
  • Do not assume the excluded item is always negative.
