……不说,还…… for “Not Only …, But Also …”
Pile one point on top of another in casual Chinese with ……
Put 不说 after the first point to mean “never mind that” and then add a second, usually bigger point with 还. It is a spoken alternative to 不但……
When to use ……不说,还…… for “Not Only …, But Also …”
In ……不说,还……, the first point comes first and 不说 follows it: 菜贵不说 “never mind that the food is expensive”. The next clause adds a second point with 还 (or 也), and this second point is usually the bigger or more surprising one: 这家饭馆菜贵不说,服务还特别慢 “Not only is the food here expensive, the service is really slow too.” The pattern is common in conversation. It is often used for complaints, but it works for praise too.
Not only did he fix my computer, he also taught me a lot about computers.
This method is not only a hassle, it also wastes time.
Not only is it raining today, it’s windy too.
Xiao Wang is not only friendly, he is also very conscientious.
- 不说 comes after the first point: 贵不说, not 不说贵.
- 还 goes after the subject of the second clause: 服务还特别慢, not 还服务特别慢.
- Don’t confuse 不说 (adds a further point) with 别说 (“let alone”, pointing to an extreme case).
