When to use Uncertainty with 未必
未必 does not deny something completely. It says the claim may not be true, or the expected result is not guaranteed.
他答应了，也未必会准时来。
He agreed, but he may not necessarily arrive on time.
贵的产品未必适合每个人。
An expensive product is not necessarily suitable for everyone.
第一印象未必准确。
A first impression is not necessarily accurate.
沉默未必代表反对。
Silence does not necessarily represent opposition.
Common traps
- 未必 is weaker than 一定不; it leaves possibility open.
- It is often used for cautious disagreement.
- Do not add 不 after 未必 unless the predicate itself needs it.
