别说……，（连）……都/也…… for “Never Mind …, Even …”

Wave away an obvious case with 别说 and then give a more extreme one with 连……都 or 就是……也: 别说我，连老师都没做出来.

Padrão

别说 + A，连 / 就是 + B + 都 / 也 + predicate

别说 sets aside A, the case everyone would expect; the second clause names B, a more extreme case, with 连……都 or 就是……也. If even B is true, A obviously is too.

这道题太难了，别说我，连老师都没做出来。

When to use 别说……，（连）……都/也…… for “Never Mind …, Even …”

Here 别说 does not mean “don’t say”. It means “never mind …” or “not to mention …”: it sets aside a case that is obvious, then the next clause gives a more extreme case to make the point strong. 这道题太难了，别说我，连老师都没做出来 “This problem is so hard that never mind me, even the teacher couldn’t solve it.” The second clause marks the extreme case with 连……都/也 or 就是……也. The idea is: if even the extreme case is true, the obvious one certainly is.

别说一个星期，就是一个月我也看不完这本书。

Never mind a week, I couldn’t finish this book even in a month.

别说是下雨，就是下雪，他也每天坚持跑步。

Never mind rain, even when it snows he still goes running every day.

外面太吵了，别说学习，连睡觉都睡不好。

It’s so noisy outside that, never mind studying, I can’t even sleep properly.

他连自己的名字都写不好，别说写作文了。

He can’t even write his own name properly, let alone an essay.

Erros comuns

  • After 别说……, the other clause needs 都 or 也, usually with 连 or 就是 to mark the extreme case.
  • The case after 连 or 就是 must be the more extreme one, the one that makes the statement strongest.
  • Here 别说 means “never mind” or “let alone”, not “don’t say”; don’t confuse it with 还别说.
