Purpose with 为...而

Use 为...而 for formal purpose, sacrifice, and value-driven action.

Pattern

为 + purpose/person/value + 而 + action

Make the purpose or value behind an action explicit.

他为理想而奋斗。

When to use Purpose with 为...而

为...而 links a purpose or value to the action done for it. It is more formal and rhetorical than 为了 alone.

他们为保护环境而努力。

They work hard to protect the environment.

有人为短期利益而牺牲质量。

Some people sacrifice quality for short-term benefit.

我们为解决问题而合作。

We cooperate in order to solve the problem.

她为追求真相而坚持调查。

She persists in investigating for the pursuit of truth.

Common traps

  • 为...而 is often rhetorical or formal.
  • Do not use it for every simple purpose; 为了 is usually easier.
  • The purpose after 为 should be meaningful enough to justify the tone.
