Use 的 to connect people with things, relationships, and descriptions.

这不是我的书。

When to use 的 for Possession

的 links a modifier to a noun. At HSK 1, the most useful case is possession: 我的书, 他的老师, 妈妈的手机.

她是老师的朋友。

She is the teacher’s friend.

这是妈妈的手机。

This is Mom’s phone.

我的名字叫安娜。

My name is Anna.

中国的朋友来了。

The friend from China came.

Common traps

  • Do not use 是 to show possession.
  • Use 的 before the noun being owned.
  • Avoid stacking many 的 phrases in beginner sentences.
