为什么 for “Why”

为什么 asks for a reason; it sits after the subject, before the verb, and the answer usually starts with 因为.

句型

Subject + 为什么 + verb / adjective? → 因为……

为什么 asks for the reason; keep it after the subject and before the verb, and answer with 因为.

你为什么不吃早饭?

When to use 为什么 for “Why”

为什么 means “why”. Unlike English “why”, it doesn’t have to jump to the front: it usually goes after the subject and right before the verb or adjective, as in 你为什么不吃早饭? The answer normally starts with 因为 (because). Don’t add 吗 to a 为什么 question, because 为什么 already makes it a question.

今天为什么这么冷?

Why is it so cold today?

为什么你不告诉我?

Why won’t you tell me?

你为什么不坐地铁去呢?

Why don’t you take the subway?

我不知道他为什么生气。

I don’t know why he’s angry.

常见误区

  • Don’t add 吗: 你为什么不来吗? is wrong; say 你为什么不来?
  • Don’t put 为什么 after the verb like an afterthought: 你不来为什么 is wrong.
  • Answer a 为什么 question with 因为, not 所以.
