When to use A比B更... and A比B还... for “Even More … Than”

In a plain 比 sentence, A比B冷 just says A is colder than B. Put 更 (gèng) or 还 (hái) before the adjective and the meaning becomes “even colder”: 今天比昨天更冷 “Today is even colder than yesterday,” which tells you yesterday was already cold. 更 is the neutral, all-purpose choice. 还 sounds more spoken and adds surprise or emphasis, often because the result is unexpected: 弟弟才十二岁,可是比爸爸还高 “My brother is only twelve, but he’s even taller than Dad.” Words like 很, 非常 or 太 cannot be used in this slot.

弟弟才十二岁,可是比爸爸还高。

My little brother is only twelve, but he’s even taller than Dad.

这家饭店的菜比那家更好吃。

The food at this restaurant is even tastier than at that one.

坐地铁比打车还快。

Taking the subway is even faster than taking a taxi.

他的汉语比我的还好,他才学了一年!

His Chinese is even better than mine, and he’s only studied for a year!

Häufige Stolperfallen

  • Don’t use 很, 非常 or 太 after 比 B: say 比昨天更冷, not 比昨天很冷.
  • 更 and 还 go before the adjective, after B: 比他还高.
  • 更 and 还 suggest B already has the quality: 比他还高 implies he is tall too.
