Giving an Example with 拿……来说

Use 拿……来说 to pick one example and use it to back up a general point.

Muster

General point，(就)拿 + example + 来说，+ details about the example

First make the point, then say 拿 X 来说 and let X prove it.

这个城市的交通很方便，拿地铁来说，几分钟就有一趟。

When to use Giving an Example with 拿……来说

拿……来说 means “take … as an example”. First make a general point, then put one example between 拿 and 来说 at the start of the next clause, and go on to say something about that example that supports your point. 就拿……来说 adds emphasis and is very common, and 拿……来讲 means the same.

现在很多人用手机付钱，拿我妈妈来说，她已经很久不带钱包了。

Lots of people pay by phone now. Take my mom: she hasn’t carried a wallet in ages.

学外语要多练习，就拿口语来说，每天都得开口说。

Learning a language takes lots of practice. Take speaking: you have to speak every day.

我们班同学的爱好很多，拿小王来说，他会画画，也会弹吉他。

Our classmates have lots of hobbies. Take Xiao Wang: he draws and plays the guitar.

每个季节都有好吃的水果，就拿夏天来说，有西瓜、桃子和葡萄。

Every season has tasty fruit. Take summer: there are watermelons, peaches and grapes.

Häufige Stolperfallen

  • Don’t mix up 拿我来说 and 对我来说: for your opinion say 对我来说，这个很难; 拿我来说 means “take me as an example”.
  • Keep both halves of the frame: say 拿北京来说，……, not 拿北京，…….
  • Don’t close 比如 with 来说: say 比如北京, or 拿北京来说, not 比如北京来说.
