Serial Verbs for Cause, Contrast and Condition
Two verb phrases side by side can mean “so” (我有事不能去), “but” (他拿着书不看) or “if” (你有问题可以问老师), without any linking word.
Muster
subject + verb phrase 1 + verb phrase 2 (cause → result | A but not B | if A, then B)
In a serial verb sentence, two verb phrases share one subject with no comma or linking word. Besides “first … then …,” the first phrase can give a reason (我有事不能参加晚会), set up a contrast (他拿着书不看), or state a condition (你有问题可以问老师).
我有事不能参加晚会。
When to use Serial Verbs for Cause, Contrast and Condition
Chinese often puts two verb phrases one after the other without 因为, 但是 or 如果, and the listener works out the link from the meaning. If phrase 1 is a reason, phrase 2 is the result: 我有事不能参加晚会 “I have something on, so I can’t go to the party.” If phrase 2 is negative and goes against phrase 1, it is a contrast: 他拿着书不看 “he’s holding a book but not reading it.” If phrase 1 is a possible situation and phrase 2 has 可以, 能 or 要, it is a condition: 你有问题可以问老师 “if you have questions, you can ask the teacher.”
他拿着书不看,一直在玩手机。
He’s holding a book but not reading it; he keeps playing on his phone.
你有问题可以问老师。
Wenn du Fragen hast, kannst du den Lehrer fragen.
他听了这个消息很高兴。
He was very happy when he heard the news.
她买了票没去,真可惜。
She bought a ticket but didn’t go. What a pity.
Häufige Stolperfallen
- Keep one subject for both phrases; if the subjects differ, use a full clause with a connector.
- Don’t put a comma between the two verb phrases in this short form: 你有问题可以问老师.
- Look at phrase 2 to find the link: a negative after a positive often means contrast, 可以 / 能 often means condition.
