虽说 + fact，但 / 可 (+ subject + 还是 / 也) + contrast; subject + 虽说……，(subject +) 却……

虽说 means “although”, just like 虽然, but sounds more conversational. The second clause turns with 但, 可, 但是 or 可是, often with 还是 or 也, or with 却 after its subject.

虽说已经到了春天，可天气还是很冷。

When to use 虽说……，但/可…… for “Although …, Still …”

虽说 is one word meaning “although”. It introduces a fact that you accept, and the next clause says what is true anyway: 虽说已经到了春天，可天气还是很冷 “Although it’s already spring, it’s still cold.” The second clause starts with 但, 可, 但是 or 可是, and often contains 还是 or 也. 虽说 can come before the subject or right after it: 虽说这家饭馆不大 or 这家饭馆虽说不大. It is more casual than 虽然 and very common in speech and in relaxed writing.

虽说他学中文才一年，但说得已经很流利了。

Although he has only been learning Chinese for a year, he already speaks very fluently.

这家饭馆虽说不大，可菜做得特别好吃。

This restaurant may not be big, but the food is really good.

虽说考试结束了，但我们还不能放松。

Although the exams are over, we can’t relax yet.

虽说是周末，可爸爸还在公司加班。

Although it’s the weekend, Dad is still working overtime at the office.

Häufige Stolperfallen

Don’t leave out the turn: the second clause needs 但, 可, 却 or 还是.
虽说 is just “although”; it does not mean “although someone said”.
但 and 可 go at the start of the second clause; 却 goes after its subject: 身体却很好, not 却身体很好.
