Verb/Adjective + 得 + Phrase or Clause for “So … That …”

After 得, Chinese can add a whole verb phrase, a small clause or a set phrase to show the result: 高兴得跳了起来, 说得大家都笑了, 忘得一干二净.

Patrón

verb / adjective + 得 + verb phrase | + subject + predicate | + set phrase

A state complement after 得 can be more than an adjective. It can be a verb phrase (高兴得跳了起来), a little clause with its own subject (热得我睡不着觉), or a set phrase (忙得团团转). Each one shows the state or effect that the action or feeling led to, like English “so … that ….”

她高兴得跳了起来。

When to use Verb/Adjective + 得 + Phrase or Clause for “So … That …”

Put the verb or adjective first, then 得, then a description of the result. There are three common types. A verb phrase shows what the person did or couldn’t do: 她高兴得跳了起来, 累得走不动了. A subject + predicate clause brings in a new subject: 他说得大家都笑了 (他 talked, 大家 laughed), 雨下得路上一个人都没有. A set phrase gives a vivid picture: 忙得团团转 “rushing around in circles,” 忘得一干二净 “completely forgotten.”

他说得大家都笑了。

He spoke so funnily that everyone laughed.

雨下得路上一个人都没有。

It rained so hard that there wasn’t a single person on the road.

我忙得团团转,连饭都没时间吃。

I was rushing around so much that I didn’t even have time to eat.

孩子们玩得忘了时间。

The children were having so much fun that they lost track of time.

Errores frecuentes

  • Use 得, not 的 or 地, before the result: 高兴得跳了起来.
  • Don’t add 很 before the adjective: 很高兴得跳了起来 is wrong.
  • With verb + object, repeat the verb before 得: 讲故事讲得大家都笑了, not 讲故事得大家都笑了.
