When to use 只是...罢了 and 矣: Final Particles for “That’s All” and Classical “Already”
罢了 (bà le) goes at the very end of a sentence and means “that’s all, it’s only …”. It makes a fact, a reason or an action sound small or unimportant, so it often softens what you say or brushes off praise or worry. It usually works together with a limiting word earlier in the sentence: 只是…罢了, 不过…罢了, 只不过…罢了, 无非…罢了. 矣 (yǐ) is a final particle from classical Chinese, close to modern 了: it marks that something is (already) so. Today it appears mainly in fixed written phrases, such as 足矣 “that’s enough”, 为时晚矣 “it’s too late”, 久矣 “for a long time already”.
他不过是开个玩笑罢了,你别当真。
He was only joking; don’t take it seriously.
等到考试前一天才开始复习,为时晚矣。
If you only start revising the day before the exam, it’s too late.
每天坚持读半小时书,足矣。
Reading for half an hour every day is enough.
我无非是想提醒你一下罢了。
All I wanted was to remind you, that’s all.
