除非 names the only condition that works, and 否则 or 不然 says what will happen if it is not met: 除非你提前报名,否则不能参加.

Structure

除非 + the only condition,否则 / 不然 + what happens if it is not met

除非 introduces the one condition that must be met. 否则 or 不然 starts the second clause and says what happens otherwise, usually something negative: 除非你提前报名,否则不能参加比赛 “unless you sign up in advance, you can’t take part.”

When to use 除非...,否则/不然... for “Unless …, Otherwise …”

The first clause, with 除非, gives the only way something can happen. The second clause starts with 否则 or 不然 and tells what will happen if that condition is not met: 除非大家都同意,否则这个计划不会改变. 否则 and 不然 go at the start of the clause, before any subject, and are often followed by 就, 不能 or 不会.

Unless the weather is good tomorrow, we won’t go hiking.

Unless everyone agrees, this plan won’t change.

Unless it pours, the sports day will go ahead as planned.

Unless there’s a special reason, you can’t take leave.

Pièges courants

  • Start the second clause with 否则 or 不然, before its subject: 否则我们不去, not 我们否则不去.
  • Don’t use 就 in place of 否则: 除非下大雨,否则运动会按时举行, not 除非下大雨,运动会就按时举行.
  • With 才, the result is positive (才能参加); with 否则 / 不然, it is what happens if the condition fails (不能参加).
