只要 + condition + 就; 只有 + condition + 才
只要 gives a sufficient condition; 只有 gives a necessary condition.
只要你努力，就会进步。
When to use 只要...就... and 只有...才...
只要...就... says the condition is enough for the result. 只有...才... says the result happens only under that condition.
只有多练习，才会进步。
Only by practicing more will you improve.
只有你同意，我们才开始。
Only if you agree will we start.
只要有时间，我就复习。
As long as I have time, I review.
只有坐地铁，才不会迟到。
Only by taking the subway will we not be late.
Common traps
- Do not swap 就 and 才 casually; they change the logic.
- 只要 feels sufficient; 只有 feels restrictive.
- The condition follows 只要 or 只有.
