When to use Core Direction Nouns

Read 上 / 下 / 里 / 外 / 前 / 后 as a sentence tool, not just as vocabulary. First locate the main action or claim, then ask what 上 adds to it.

灯在天花板上。

The lamp is on the ceiling.

他在楼上等我。

He is waiting for me upstairs.

Common traps

  • Do not translate 上 / 下 / 里 / 外 / 前 / 后 mechanically from English; check the Chinese word order first.
  • Keep 上 close to the part of the sentence it controls.
