When to use Personal Pronouns 我, 你, 您, 他, 她, 它 and 大家

The basic pronouns are 我 “I/me”, 你 “you”, 他 “he/him”, 她 “she/her” and 它 “it”. Unlike English, they never change form: the same word is the subject or the object, as in 我认识他 and 他认识我. Add 们 for the plural (我们, 你们, 他们, 她们, 它们) and 的 for “my, your, his”: 我的书.

She is my older sister.

What country are you all from?

This is my phone, and that one is hers.

Hello, teacher! (polite)

Pièges courants

  • To a group, say 大家好 or 你们好 rather than 您们好, which most speakers avoid in conversation.
  • Call a mixed group of boys and girls 他们, not 她们: 她们 is only for a group of women or girls.
