When to use Contrast with 反而 and 却

反而 highlights a result opposite to what was expected. 却 marks contrast and surprise, often more broadly.

I meant to help but instead added trouble.

她看起来很安静，却很有主见。

She looks quiet, yet she has strong opinions.

Common traps

  • 反而 needs a clear reversal; do not use it for any ordinary contrast.
  • 却 can contrast qualities without a full reversal.
