与其……,宁可/宁愿…… for “Rather Than …, I’d Rather …”
Reject one option and firmly choose another with 与其……,宁可……, as in 与其在家里干等,我宁可出去找找.
Structure
The option after 与其 is the one you turn down; the option after 宁可 or 宁愿 is the one you choose, often even though it costs you something.
When to use 与其……,宁可/宁愿…… for “Rather Than …, I’d Rather …”
B means “rather than A, I’d rather B.” A, after 与其, is the option you reject; B, after 宁可 or 宁愿, is the one you choose: 与其在家里干等,我宁可出去找找 “Rather than just wait at home, I’d rather go out and look.” B is often harder or less comfortable, so the pattern shows a firm personal decision. 宁可 and 宁愿 mean the same here; 宁愿 stresses being willing, and 宁可 sounds a little more decisive.
Rather than buy a pile of cheap clothes, I’d rather buy one good-quality piece.
Rather than ride for two hours every day, he would rather move near the school.
Rather than dash it off, I’d rather spend more time and do my homework properly.
Rather than let others help him, he’d rather do it slowly himself.
