Giving an Opinion with 在……看来

Use 在……看来 to introduce an opinion as someone’s point of view: 在我看来, 在老师看来.

Structure

在 + person + 看来，opinion

在……看来 frames what follows as one person’s view, not a fact: 在我看来 = “in my view”.

在我看来，这个办法最简单。

When to use Giving an Opinion with 在……看来

在……看来 means “in someone’s view” and introduces an opinion. Put a person or group between 在 and 看来, put the phrase at the start of the sentence, then a comma and the opinion: 在我看来，这个办法最简单。 It presents the idea as that person’s judgement, not as a fact, so it sounds thoughtful and a little softer than a plain statement.

在老师看来，复习比做新题更重要。

In the teacher’s view, reviewing matters more than doing new exercises.

在很多人看来，学汉语很难。

Many people think learning Chinese is hard.

在他看来，周末就应该好好休息。

As he sees it, weekends are for a good rest.

在父母看来，这是小事，可是在孩子看来，这是大事。

To parents this is a small thing, but to children it’s a big deal.

Pièges courants

  • Don’t mix the two frames: say 在我看来 or 对我来说, not 对我看来.
  • Keep 在 at the front: 在我看来，这样不好 is right, but 我看来，这样不好 is wrong. Without 在, say 我看 or 我觉得.
  • Don’t add a second opinion verb: say 在我看来，这个办法很好, not 在我看来，我觉得这个办法很好.
