用不着 for “There’s No Need”

Use 用不着 to say there is no need to do something or no use for something, and 用得着……吗 to ask if it is really necessary.

Pola

用不着 + verb (no need to); 用不着 + noun (no use for)

用不着 removes a need: 你用不着担心 is “you don’t need to worry”, and 这些书我用不着了 is “I have no use for these books now”.

你用不着担心,他已经到了。

When to use 用不着 for “There’s No Need”

用不着 (yòng bu zháo) is a colloquial way to say “there’s no need”. Put it before a verb to mean “no need to do it” (你用不着担心), or before or after a noun to mean “have no use for it” (这些书我用不着了). It only removes a need; it never forbids anything, so it is not the same as 不能.

这点小事用不着麻烦别人。

There’s no need to bother anyone over something this small.

这些旧书我用不着了,送给你吧。

I have no use for these old books anymore; you can have them.

去超市用不着开车,走路十分钟就到。

You don’t need to drive to the supermarket; it’s a ten-minute walk.

这点小事,用得着这么着急吗?

It’s such a small thing. Is there really any need to get so worked up?

Kesalahan umum

  • Don’t mix up 用不着 and 用不了: only 用不着 means “no need to” before a verb (你用不着担心, not 你用不了担心); 用不了 means “can’t use it all” or “won’t take”: 用不了一个小时 “it won’t take an hour”.
  • 用不着 does not forbid: for “you can’t play on your phone in class”, say 上课时不能玩手机, not 上课时用不着玩手机.
  • Answer 谢谢 with 不用谢, not 用不着谢, which sounds curt.
