When to use 今天晴天 and 他是高个子 for Describing With Noun Phrases
A noun phrase, usually a describer + noun, can be the whole predicate when it tells you what the subject is like: 今天晴天 (“today is a sunny day”), 我妹妹长头发 (“my little sister has long hair”). There is no verb at all. You can also put 是 in front, which explains or describes a feature rather than naming what the subject is: 今天是晴天, 他是个高个子. 是 also describes a feature with a 的-phrase, for colour, newness and the like: 这件衣服是新的, 我的书包是红色的.
我妹妹长头发、大眼睛。
My little sister has long hair and big eyes.
我们老师是个高个子。
Our teacher is a tall person.
这件衣服是新的,我昨天刚买。
This piece of clothing is new; I only bought it yesterday.
今天是阴天,可能会下雨。
It’s a cloudy day today; it might rain.
흔한 실수
- The negative always needs 不是: say 他不是高个子, not 他不高个子.
- Leaving out 是 works for short descriptions like weather, looks or hometown; for “I am a student” you still need 是: 我是学生.
- Don’t put 是 before a bare adjective: say 他很高, not 他是高. 是 goes with noun phrases (高个子) and 的-phrases (新的).
