Know the six prefixes and you can decode hundreds of words: 无线 is “wireless”, 亚热带 is “subtropical”, 准大学生 is “a soon-to-be university student”.

When to use Prefixes 超, 多, 反, 无, 亚 and 准

These six are class-like prefixes: each keeps a clear meaning and attaches to many bases to make new, often formal or technical words. 超 means “super-, beyond” (超大型), 多 “multi-” (多功能), 反 “anti-, opposite” (反方向), 无 “-less, without” (无线), 亚 “sub-, second-tier” (亚热带) and 准 “would-be, soon-to-be” (准大学生). The prefix goes straight before the base with nothing in between, and the result is one word, often used to describe a noun.

这台打印机是多功能的，还能复印。

This printer is multifunctional; it can make copies too.

这种超大型飞机能坐五百多人。

This extra-large type of plane can seat over five hundred people.

广州属于亚热带，冬天不太冷。

Guangzhou is in the subtropics, so winters aren’t very cold.

你走的是反方向，火车站在后面。

You’re going the opposite way; the train station is behind you.

ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย

  • Don’t use 无 as an everyday verb: say 我没有时间, not 我无时间; keep 无 for set words like 无线 and 无糖.
  • 亚军 means “runner-up”, not “Asian champion”; that is 亚洲冠军.
  • Keep casual 超 out of formal writing: in a report write 价格非常低, not 价格超低.
