Chinese Honorifics: What to Call Someone in Modern Mandarin
In modern Mandarin, a surname plus an appropriate role is often more useful than searching for a single equivalent of “sir” or “madam.” 王老师, “Teacher Wang,” and 李经理, “Manager Li,” make the relationship clear. The best form still depends on how the person introduces themselves and what people in that setting actually use.
Names, surnames and professional roles
老师 (lǎo shī) addresses teachers and can also be an honorific for respected practitioners in some professional communities. Do not assume it is the required title for everyone with expertise. 经理 (jīng lǐ, manager) and 医生 (yī shēng, doctor) are useful when they describe the actual role.
Chinese family names normally come before given names. In 王小明, 王 is the surname. 王老师 therefore keeps the surname and adds the role. 小王 or 老王 expresses familiarity and relative social positioning; 小 is not an invitation to call an unfamiliar senior person “little Wang.”
If someone gives you a preferred name, use it. You can ask “我怎么称呼您?” (wǒ zěn me chēng hu nín), “How should I address you?” This is more flexible than guessing an age-based title.
王老师,您好。我想请教一个问题。
Wáng lǎo shī, nín hǎo. Wǒ xiǎng qǐng jiào yí ge wèn tí.
请教 presents the question as seeking guidance.
先生, 女士, 您 and kinship address
先生 (xiān sheng) and 女士 (nǚ shì) can serve as polite adult forms of address, particularly in more formal service or written settings. 小姐 has different associations across regions and situations; it is not a universally safe translation of “Miss.”
您 (nín) is the respectful counterpart of 你. It can help mark distance or courtesy, but adding 您 to a blunt demand does not make the whole request polite. Explain what you need and allow room for the other person’s availability.
叔叔 and 阿姨 can address adults of a parental generation in familiar social settings. 哥 and 姐 can extend beyond family. These choices imply a relationship or age judgment, so observe local usage before applying them to strangers.
Leave drama titles in their story
陛下, 娘娘 and 大人 belong to particular historical or fictional hierarchies; they are not everyday replacements for a colleague’s name. A playful use among friends is possible precisely because it sounds theatrical.
For a first workplace email, start with the person’s known name or role plus 您好. For a casual message to someone who has asked you to use their given name, follow that preference. Register is a relationship choice, not a contest to add the most honorific words.
Practice by making three introductions: to a teacher, to a peer and to an unknown service contact. Change both the address and the wording of the request, then explain what relationship each version assumes.

How to use these words
您
您 is a respectful second-person pronoun, not a complete formal speech level. Replacing 你 with 您 does not automatically make a blunt demand considerate. A title, a clear request and room for the other person to respond matter too. Its frequency varies by region and relationship, so follow local usage instead of insisting that every older person must always be addressed this way.
请问,您现在方便吗?
Qǐng wèn, nín xiàn zài fāng biàn ma?
The question checks availability as well as using a respectful pronoun.
老师
老师 literally means teacher and is a natural address for someone teaching you. It can also function as a respectful professional address in some settings, but that extended use is not universal. Put the surname first in 王老师. Do not build an English-style “Teacher + given name” pattern without checking how the person wants to be addressed.
王老师,我想请教一个问题。
Wáng lǎo shī, wǒ xiǎng qǐng jiào yí ge wèn tí.
请教 presents the question as asking for someone’s knowledge or guidance.
Check your understanding
Choose an answer or say your own response before opening the explanation.
You know someone is named 陈明 but do not know their job. Is 陈经理 a safe guess?
Show answer and explanation
No. It invents a managerial role. Use an appropriate known name or ask how they prefer to be addressed.
Does 您 need to replace every 你 when speaking to a close friend?
Show answer and explanation
No. That may create distance or sound jokingly formal. Match the relationship and the person’s preference.
Common questions
Does Mandarin have honorific grammar like Korean or Japanese?
Mandarin expresses respect through pronouns, titles, vocabulary, phrasing and behavior. It does not use the same system of speech-level verb endings as Korean or Japanese. That difference is not the same as saying Mandarin has no politeness.
Is xiaojie always a safe equivalent of Miss?
No. 小姐 has different associations across regions and settings. Use an appropriate professional title or the form the person uses for themselves when unsure. A surname plus 女士 is useful in many formal written contexts.
