What counts as a character or word?
- Chinese characters: each Han ideograph counts once, including simplified, traditional, rare characters such as 𠀀, and 〇. Punctuation, Latin letters, numbers, and emoji do not count.
- Estimated Chinese words: Chinese runs are split into words using our reader dictionary. For example, 学习中文 has 4 Chinese characters and about 2 words. Word boundaries can be ambiguous; names, rare words, and dictionary coverage can change the estimate. Unknown characters count individually. English and numbers do not count as Chinese words.
- Total characters: Both totals exclude spaces, tabs, line breaks, and standalone invisible controls or marks. They include letters from every language, digits, symbols, and emoji.
- Punctuation: the second total also excludes Unicode punctuation such as ，。！？ and English commas, quotes, and hyphens. Symbols such as +, $, and emoji remain in both totals.
