Chinese Travel Phrases: Directions, Prices and Asking for Help

6 min read

Travel Mandarin becomes useful when a short question gets you information you can understand. Start with where, how much, which one and whether something is correct. Carry the written destination when possible, and practice the likely answers as well as your own question.

Find a place and understand the direction

请问 opens a question politely. 洗手间 and 厕所 can both refer to a bathroom or toilet; 洗手间 is often a comfortable public-facing choice. 在哪里 asks where something is, while 怎么走 asks how to get there.

左边 is the left side, 右边 the right side, and 一直走 means keep going straight. If an answer is too fast, 请说慢一点 asks the person to speak more slowly. Pointing to a written name or map can help confirm that you are discussing the same place.

请问,洗手间在哪里?

Qǐng wèn, xǐ shǒu jiān zài nǎ lǐ?

Excuse me, where is the bathroom?

一直走,然后向右转。

Yì zhí zǒu, rán hòu xiàng yòu zhuǎn.

Go straight, then turn right.

Listen for the sequence marker 然后, “then.”

Ask a price and decide

多少钱 asks how much something costs. “这个多少钱?” works when you can indicate the item. If the unit matters, ask explicitly: 一张票多少钱, “How much is one ticket?” Do not assume that a quoted price applies to a pair, group or return trip.

太贵了 means “too expensive.” In a setting where bargaining is appropriate, 可以便宜一点吗 asks whether it can be a little cheaper. Many shops and services have fixed prices; a phrasebook does not establish that negotiation is expected.

If you decline, 谢谢,我再看看 means “Thank you, I will look around a bit more.” You can make a polite decision without pretending to accept an offer.

这是单程票的价格吗?

Zhè shì dān chéng piào de jià gé ma?

Is this the price of a one-way ticket?

可以便宜一点吗?

Kě yǐ pián yi yì diǎn ma?

Could it be a little cheaper?

Confirm bookings and ask for practical help

预订 means reserve or book. “我有预订” tells a hotel that you have a reservation. Add your name and show the booking confirmation rather than relying on a possibly unfamiliar pronunciation.

“能帮我看一下吗?” asks someone to take a look and help. State the actual problem next: a ticket, address or booking detail. 帮我 is useful in ordinary requests; it should not be treated as a complete emergency plan.

For transport, confirm the destination, date and departure time. “是去……的吗?” checks whether this is the service going to a place. A yes to that question may still leave the departure time or platform unresolved.

Practice a repair, not only a perfect exchange

Imagine that you ask for the station and understand only “right.” Ask the speaker to repeat or show the location rather than confidently walking away. “可以再说一遍吗?” means “Could you say it again?”

The accompanying list focuses on repeatable tasks. For food preferences and paying at a restaurant, use the linked food guide. For urgent medical or safety needs, seek appropriate local help rather than relying on a short beginner vocabulary lesson.

How to use these words

预订

预订 means booking or reserving in advance. It differs from simply arriving and buying something immediately. A booking conversation often needs a name, date, number of people and confirmation detail. 我有预订 tells staff you have a reservation, but be ready for the next question. Practice saying the name on the booking and showing a written confirmation.

我预订了明天晚上的房间。

Wǒ yù dìng le míng tiān wǎn shang de fáng jiān.

I booked a room for tomorrow night.

The time phrase identifies the stay; the listener may still need the booking name.

地址

地址 means address. Asking someone to write an address is often more useful than repeatedly attempting an unfamiliar place name. 请写下来 asks for a written record, while 请再说一遍 asks for repetition. Choose the repair that solves the actual problem: if you cannot recognize the words when spoken slowly, a written destination may help more.

可以把地址写下来吗?

Kě yǐ bǎ dì zhǐ xiě xià lai ma?

Could you write the address down?

A practical request when pronunciation alone is not enough.

Check your understanding

Choose an answer or say your own response before opening the explanation.

A ticket price is quoted but you need a return trip. What detail should you check?

Show answer and explanation

Whether the price is for a one-way or return ticket, and for how many people. Knowing 多少钱 does not settle the unit.

You missed the direction after 然后. Ask for repetition.

Show answer and explanation

不好意思,可以再说一遍吗? (Bù hǎo yì si, kě yǐ zài shuō yí biàn ma?) “Sorry, could you say it again?”

Common questions

What should I learn after asking where something is?

Learn the likely answers: left, right, straight ahead, nearby and far away. Then practice confirming one instruction. A perfect question is of limited help if every response is unfamiliar.

Can I rely on English place names translated literally?

Not always. Place names often have established Chinese forms that are not word-for-word translations. Carry the written destination from a reliable booking or map and confirm it with the person helping you.
