Danmei Meaning and Chinese Fandom Vocabulary
耽美 (dān měi), usually written “danmei” in English, commonly refers to Chinese fiction centered on romantic relationships between men. 百合 (bǎi hé), literally “lily,” can refer to romance between women in a genre or fandom context. Neither label by itself tells you how explicit a particular work is. Check the actual description and age guidance for that work.
Separate genre from medium
动画 (dòng huà), or donghua in English fandom usage, means animation. 漫画 (màn huà), manhua, means comics. 小说 (xiǎo shuō) means a novel or fiction. A story can move between these media through 改编 (gǎi biān), adaptation.
A danmei novel may have a comic adaptation, while an animation may tell a story with no romance at all. “Donghua versus danmei” is therefore not a comparison of equivalent categories. One describes a medium and the other describes a genre. The same distinction helps when someone recommends a title but does not say which version they mean.
Pairings, roles and reader shorthand
CP is commonly used for a pairing or couple imagined or supported by fans. 磕 (kē), as in 磕CP, describes enjoying or enthusiastically following a pairing. 同人 (tóng rén) can refer to fan-created works. Those works should not automatically be treated as events that happen in the original story.
攻 (gōng) and 受 (shòu) are role labels often corresponding to top and bottom in male-male romance. They can refer to sexual roles, but a book may use the labels without explicit scenes. They do not establish that a character must have a particular height, temperament or degree of agency.
剧透 (jù tòu) means giving away plot developments. Before discussing a revealing character connection, it is considerate to ask whether the other reader has reached that part.

Does gege always mean a brother?
哥哥 (gē ge) means older brother and 姐姐 (jiě jie) means older sister. These words also appear as familiar, affectionate or socially extended forms of address. A translated “gege” does not by itself prove a biological relationship or a romantic one.
Look for the speaker, the addressee and how other people address the same character. Tone and narrative context determine whether an address is respectful, teasing or intimate. In real life, using a familiar kinship address with a stranger can be inappropriate even when you have heard it in a drama.
Try summarizing a recommendation in three parts: medium, genre and the feature you enjoyed. For example, “a novel with a fantasy setting and a mystery” is more informative than a string of fandom abbreviations. You can then ask for the version and avoid accidental spoilers.

How to use these words
同人
同人 in a fandom context often concerns works created around existing characters, worlds or interests. A 同人小说 is a fan work, not automatically an official sequel. The term tells you something about the relationship to a source, while 耽美 tells you something about a genre or romantic focus. One work can have both labels, but neither implies the other.
这篇同人小说有剧透。
Zhè piān tóng rén xiǎo shuō yǒu jù tòu.
A source relationship and a content warning can appear in the same description.
改编
改编 means adapting a work into another form or version. 小说改编的电视剧 is a television drama adapted from a novel. An adaptation may change a relationship, event or ending, so learning the source’s genre label does not tell you exactly what appears on screen. Distinguish what the source contains from what the adaptation actually shows.
这部动画是根据小说改编的。
Zhè bù dòng huà shì gēn jù xiǎo shuō gǎi biān de.
根据 identifies the source on which the adaptation is based.

Common questions
Are danmei and donghua the same thing?
No. 耽美 is a genre or romantic-content label, while 动画 identifies animation as a medium. An animated work can adapt a danmei story, but most animation is not defined by that genre.
Does gege always imply romantic interest?
No. 哥哥 literally means older brother and also occurs in affectionate, familiar or fan address. Context determines whether it names a relative, performs familiarity or contributes to a romantic scene.
