HSK
How to Study for the HSK: A Step-by-Step Plan
The best way to study for the HSK is to work from the official word list for your level, review those words every day with spaced repetition, read and listen to graded material built from the same words, and finish with timed practice papers. Everything else is detail. This guide puts the steps in order and links to the free HanyuGuide tools for each one.
Not sure where you stand? Estimate your HSK level in a few minutes, then come back to the plan.
1. Pick your level and edition
Two editions of the HSK syllabus are in use. HSK 2.0 has six levels. HSK 3.0 has nine levels, with levels 7 to 9 taken as one advanced exam. Before you study, check with your test centre which edition your exam date uses, because the word lists are different.
Then choose the level you will actually sit. Aim for the level just above what you can already read comfortably, not the highest level you can imagine passing.
2. Learn the word list with spaced repetition
Every HSK paper is written from its level's word list, so vocabulary is the backbone of your preparation. Open the HSK word lists for your edition and level and learn a small number of new words each day.
- Learn each word with its pinyin, tones, meaning and an example, not as an isolated translation.
- Review with spaced repetition, so each word comes back just before you would forget it.
- Keep new words small enough that you can still finish your reviews every day.
The free HSK flashcards let you practise any level straight away. A HanyuGuide account schedules your reviews for you and keeps track of what you know.
3. Read and listen at your level
Knowing a word on a flashcard is not the same as recognising it in a sentence at exam speed. Read short passages built from your level's vocabulary, and listen to them before you read the text.
Use the graded HSK 3.0 readings or HSK 2.0 readings. When a word stops you, look it up in the reader and add it to your reviews.
4. Learn the grammar patterns
Each level also expects a set of grammar points. Study them with examples and check yourself by building your own sentences. The HSK grammar guides list the patterns level by level.
5. Practise the exam format
In the last weeks, switch to the exam itself. Take a timed practice paper, mark it, and spend your next sessions on the sections where you lost the most points. Quick checks such as the HSK vocabulary quiz show which words still need work.
A simple weekly routine
- Every day: finish your reviews, then learn a few new words from your list.
- Three times a week: listen to and read one graded passage.
- Once a week: study one or two grammar points and write sentences with them.
- Final weeks: add one timed practice paper a week and review your mistakes.

HSK study questions
How do I study for the HSK?
Choose your level and edition, learn that level's word list with daily spaced repetition, read and listen to graded passages built from the same words, study the level's grammar points, and finish with timed practice papers.
Should I study the HSK 2.0 or HSK 3.0 word list?
Study the edition your exam uses. HSK 2.0 has six levels and HSK 3.0 has nine. Ask your test centre which edition applies to your test date before you start, because the lists differ.
How long does it take to pass HSK 3 or HSK 4?
It depends on your starting point, how much you study each day and which edition you take. Learn the word list at a pace you can review every day, then take a timed practice paper. Your practice score is a better guide than any fixed number of months.
What is the best way to memorize HSK vocabulary?
Use spaced repetition: learn a few new words each day and review each word just before you would forget it. Learn pinyin, tones and an example sentence with every word, and meet the words again in reading and listening.
How should I practise HSK listening and reading?
Use graded passages written with your level's vocabulary. Listen once without the text, then read along, then look up the words that stopped you and add them to your reviews.
Do I need to learn Chinese characters before the HSK?
Yes, for anything beyond the first levels. In the HSK 2.0 papers, pinyin is printed with the characters only at levels 1 and 2. From level 3 you read characters without pinyin, so learn characters together with your words from the start.
How do I know my HSK level?
Take the free HanyuGuide HSK level estimator. It is a short adaptive vocabulary quiz that estimates the HSK 3.0 level that matches what you can already recall.

Studying is paid: a subscription adds new words each day, spaced-repetition reviews that bring each word back before you forget it, and progress saved on every device. What is the difference between the HSK, TOCFL and BCT?
The HSK is the main Mandarin proficiency test from mainland China and uses simplified characters. The TOCFL is Taiwan's proficiency test and is usually taken in traditional characters. The BCT is a business Chinese test for workplace language. Choose the one your school, employer or visa asks for.
