When to use 为什么 for “Why”
为什么 means “why”. Unlike English “why”, it doesn’t have to jump to the front: it usually goes after the subject and right before the verb or adjective, as in 你为什么不吃早饭? The answer normally starts with 因为 (because). Don’t add 吗 to a 为什么 question, because 为什么 already makes it a question.
今天为什么这么冷?
Why is it so cold today?
为什么你不告诉我?
Why won’t you tell me?
你为什么不坐地铁去呢?
Why don’t you take the subway?
我不知道他为什么生气。
I don’t know why he’s angry.
