No Matter How with 怎么都不 and 怎么也没
Say that something just won’t happen however hard you try, as in 我怎么也睡不着 and 我怎么找都没找到.

怎么 shows the effort, 都/也 + a negative shows it failed: 怎么找都没找到.

When to use No Matter How with 怎么都不 and 怎么也没
怎么 + verb + 都/也 + negative means “no matter how (I try), it still doesn’t happen”. 怎么 goes right before the verb that shows the effort, and 都 or 也 comes after it, just before 不 or 没. Use 没 when you tried and failed in the past (怎么找都没找到), and 不 for what won’t or can’t happen (他怎么说都不听, 怎么也睡不着).
他怎么说都不听。
Whatever you tell him, he won’t listen.
昨天晚上我怎么也睡不着。
Last night I just couldn’t fall asleep, whatever I did.
这个门怎么开都开不开。
This door won’t open, however I try.
他的名字我怎么也想不起来了。
I just can’t remember his name.
Errores frecuentes
- Put 都/也 after 怎么 + verb, not before 怎么: 我怎么找都没找到, not 我都怎么找没找到.
- For a past attempt that failed, use 没: 怎么找也没找到, not 怎么找也不找到.
- With 不管/无论 at the start, keep 都 in the second clause: 不管我怎么说，他都不听, not 不管我怎么说，他不听.
