Adding a Point with 此外 and 另外

Use 此外 and 另外 to add one more point, and use 另外 on its own to mean “another” or “separately”.

Structure

Statement。此外/另外，+ one more point; 另外 + number + measure word + noun

Both open a new point meaning “in addition”, but only 另外 can also mean “another” before a noun.

这家饭馆的菜很好吃，此外，价格也不贵。

When to use Adding a Point with 此外 and 另外

此外 and 另外 both mean “in addition, besides”. They stand at the start of a new clause or sentence, usually followed by a comma, and add one more point to what you just said; 还 or 也 often comes later in that clause. 此外 sounds formal and written, while 另外 is common in both speech and writing.

明天考试要带铅笔，另外，别忘了带学生证。

Bring a pencil to tomorrow’s exam. Also, don’t forget your student card.

这份工作收入不错。此外，离我家也很近。

This job pays well. On top of that, it’s close to my home.

我只认识小王，另外两个人我不认识。

I only know Xiao Wang; I don’t know the other two people.

这本书我看完了，能再借我另外一本吗？

I’ve finished this book. Could you lend me another one?

Pièges courants

  • Say 另外一个人, not 此外一个人: only 另外 can mean “another” before a number and measure word.
  • Don’t put 此外 between two adjectives: say 又便宜又好吃 or 不但便宜，而且好吃, not 便宜此外好吃. 此外 opens a new clause.
  • With friends, say 另外，你明天几点来？ rather than 此外，你明天几点来？, which sounds like a written report.
