既然...就...

Pattern

既然 + known fact, 就 + conclusion/action

Use 既然 when the reason is already accepted.

既然你已经决定了，就开始吧。

When to use 既然...就...

既然 introduces a known or accepted premise. 就 introduces the natural decision, conclusion, or action that follows.

既然时间不多，我们就坐地铁。

Since there is not much time, we will take the subway.

既然大家都有空，就这样安排吧。

Since everyone is free, arrange it this way.

既然你不舒服，就早点休息。

Since you do not feel well, rest early.

既然已经报名了，就认真准备。

Since you have already registered, prepare seriously.

Common traps

  • 既然 is not neutral “if”; it assumes the premise is true.
  • 就 belongs with the resulting action or conclusion.
  • Avoid using 既然 when the fact is still uncertain.
