越...越...

Describe “the more..., the more...” relationships.

Pattern

越 + verb/adjective, 越 + adjective/result

Use 越...越... when one change grows with another.

你越努力，进步越快。

When to use 越...越...

The first 越 introduces the changing condition. The second 越 introduces the changing result or degree.

练习越多，效果越好。

The more practice, the better the result.

朋友越多，机会越多。

The more friends, the more opportunities.

天气越来越冷。

The weather is getting colder and colder.

中文越学越有意思。

Chinese gets more interesting the more you study it.

Common traps

  • Do not mix 越...越... with 比 in the same simple comparison.
  • Keep the two halves balanced.
  • 越来越 is related but means “more and more,” not “the more..., the more....”
