Make “although...but...” sentences that connect opposing ideas.

Pattern

虽然 + fact, 但是 + contrast

Use 虽然 for the conceded fact and 但是 for the contrast.

虽然这个办法方便，但是有点贵。

When to use 虽然...但是...

虽然 introduces something true, and 但是 introduces the surprising or contrasting result. Chinese commonly uses both together.

他很忙，但是还愿意帮忙。

He is busy, but still willing to help.

虽然坐地铁很方便，但是人太多。

Although taking the subway is convenient, there are too many people.

虽然今天下雨，但是我们还是去了。

Although it rained today, we still went.

这本书虽然不长，但是很有意思。

Although this book is not long, it is interesting.

Common traps

  • Chinese can use 虽然 and 但是 together; English usually avoids “although...but.”
  • 但是 introduces the contrast, not the reason.
  • Keep each clause complete enough to stand on its own.
