不X不...,一X... for “You Don’t Know Until You Try”
Use 不X不……,一X…… to say you only discovered something surprising once you actually did X.
Pattern
不 + X + 不知道,一 + X + 吓一跳 / 才发现……
The same verb X appears twice: without doing it you would never know; the moment you do it, you find something surprising.
不看不知道,一看吓一跳。
When to use 不X不...,一X... for “You Don’t Know Until You Try”
The first half, 不X不知道, means “if you don’t X, you won’t know.” The second half, 一X……, means “once you X, …” and gives the surprise. The same verb, usually one syllable, fills both X slots: 看, 问, 算, 比, 试.
不算不知道,一算吓一跳,这个月我买了二十本书。
I had no idea until I added it up: I bought twenty books this month!
不问不知道,一问才知道他是我同学的哥哥。
I didn’t know until I asked: he’s my classmate’s older brother.
不比不知道,一比才发现差别这么大。
You can’t tell until you compare them, and then you see how big the difference is.
不试不知道,一试才发现这道菜很好做。
I didn’t know until I tried: this dish is really easy to make.
Common traps
- Use the same verb in both halves: 不看不知道,一看…… not 不看不知道,一听…….
- Start with 不, not 没: 没看不知道 is wrong.
- The classic second half is 吓一跳 or 才发现 / 才知道; 才 stresses that you only found out at that moment.
