...的话,就... for “If … Then”

Close an “if” clause with 的话 and link the result with 就.

Pattern

的话 goes at the END of the condition, so it can mark “if” on its own or together with 如果 at the start.

When to use ...的话,就... for “If … Then”

的话 is a particle that comes at the end of a condition, like a spoken “if” that closes the clause: 下雨的话 means “if it rains.” Then a comma and the result follow.

If you’re tired, take a rest first.

If you have questions, you can ask the teacher.

If you have time, come over to my place for a meal.

If possible, please come a bit early.

Common traps

  • 的话 goes at the end of the condition, not the beginning: 你累的话, not 的话你累.
  • In the result clause, put 就 after the subject: 我们就去, not 就我们去.
  • Use 的时候 for “when” something happens or is sure to happen; 的话 is only for “if.”

Targeted drill

Practice this exact pattern before moving on.
