Future Adverbs 将 and 将要

Use 将 as the formal “will” in notices and news, and 将要…了 for something that is about to happen.

Pattern

subject + 将 + verb (formal “will”); subject + 将要 + verb (+ 了)

将 is the written “will”; in conversation you would usually say 会 or 要…了 instead.

新图书馆将在九月开放。

When to use Future Adverbs 将 and 将要

将 and 将要 go before the verb, ahead of any time or place phrase in front of it, and mark something that will happen. 将 is a formal, written “will”, common in news, notices and speeches: 新图书馆将在九月开放. 将要 means “be going to, be about to”, usually about the near future, and often ends with 了: 火车将要开了. In everyday chat, people more often say 会 or 要/快要…了.

Common traps

  • Don’t use 将 as a time word: 将来我想当老师, not 将我想当老师.
  • Don’t use 将 in casual chat: 我明天会去找你 sounds natural, while 我明天将去找你 sounds like an official notice.
  • Put 不 after 将, not before it: 明天将不上课, not 明天不将上课.
