...,还... for Adding Another Fact
Use 还 in a second clause to add one more thing someone did, does, or is.
Pattern
clause 1,(time) + 还 + verb phrase
还 adds another action or quality for the same subject: “and also, on top of that.”
我今天买了苹果,还买了牛奶。
When to use ...,还... for Adding Another Fact
Say the first fact, add a comma, then put 还 before the verb of the second clause. 还 tells the listener “and there’s more.” The subject is usually the same and is not repeated.
他会说汉语,还会写汉字。
He can speak Chinese, and he can also write Chinese characters.
昨天我看了电影,还见了朋友。
Yesterday I saw a movie and also met up with friends.
这家店的衣服很漂亮,还很便宜。
The clothes in this shop are pretty, and they’re cheap too.
我明天要上课,还要去超市。
Tomorrow I have class, and I also need to go to the supermarket.
Common traps
- Put 还 before the verb (or before 要 or 很): ……,还买了牛奶, not ……,买了牛奶还.
- When a different person does the same thing, use 也, not 还: 我去,他也去.
- 还 also means “still,” as in 他还在睡觉 (he is still sleeping); the context tells you which meaning is meant.
