竟然, 究竟 and 到底 for Surprise and “What on Earth?”
Use 竟然 for something surprising that really happened, and 究竟 or 到底 to press for the real answer in a question.
Pattern
subject + 竟然 + verb (surprise); 到底/究竟 + question (pressing)
竟然 says “to my surprise”: the fact is real but unexpected. 到底 and 究竟 go into questions to ask “what exactly, what on earth?” and push for a clear answer. 究竟 sounds more formal.
你到底想去哪儿?
When to use 竟然, 究竟 and 到底 for Surprise and “What on Earth?”
All three are mood adverbs: they go after the subject and before the verb. 竟然 marks a real fact that surprises the speaker: 他竟然忘了 (he actually forgot!). 到底 and 究竟 are used in questions with a question word, a 还是 choice or a V不V form, to show you really want the true answer, often with some impatience: 你到底去不去? 究竟 means the same but sounds more formal. If the subject is itself a question word, 到底/究竟 comes first: 到底谁说的?
他才学了半年,竟然能用中文写信了。
He has only studied for half a year, and he can already write letters in Chinese!
这道题的答案究竟是什么?
What exactly is the answer to this question?
我等了他一个小时,他竟然忘了。
I waited an hour for him, and he actually forgot.
你到底去不去?快告诉我。
Are you going or not? Tell me now.
Common traps
- Don’t add 吗 after 到底/究竟: say 你到底去不去?, not 你到底去吗?
- 竟然 is for surprising facts, not for asking questions.
- When the subject is 谁 or 什么, put 到底 before it: 到底谁说的?
