When to use 擅自, 刻意, 执意 and 毅然: Adverbs of Will and Attitude

These adverbs go before the verb and describe the will or attitude behind an action. Without permission: 擅自 “on one’s own authority”, common in rules (不得擅自离开); 私自 “privately, secretly”, for doing something for oneself without asking (私自拿走). Openly or by force: 公然 “openly”, for doing something wrong in front of others; 强行 “by force” (强行打开). Freely: 任意 “at will, any way one likes” (任意选择, 不得任意修改). Insisting and intending: 执意 “insist on”, usually when others try to stop you (执意要走); 刻意 “deliberately, with conscious effort”, sometimes too much (刻意模仿); 有意 “on purpose, intentionally” (不是有意的). Firm decisions: 毅然 “resolutely”, for a brave choice (毅然放弃); 断然 “flatly, decisively” (断然拒绝).

Common traps

  • 擅自 stresses breaking a rule or going beyond your authority; 私自 stresses doing something secretly for yourself.
  • 毅然 praises a brave, firm decision; 执意 often suggests stubbornness against other people’s advice.
  • 刻意 means “with deliberate effort” (刻意打扮); for teasing or annoying someone on purpose, use 故意.
