Particles 啦, 嘛 and 也好
Add a lively change with 啦, an “it’s obvious” or coaxing tone with 嘛, and accept options with 也好 or A也好,B也好.
Pattern
sentence + 啦 / 嘛; clause + 也好; A也好,B也好,都…
啦 is an excited 了, 嘛 means “it’s obvious”, and 也好 means “that’s fine too”.
他还是个孩子嘛,别生他的气。
When to use Particles 啦, 嘛 and 也好
啦 and 嘛 usually go at the very end of a sentence and add tone. 啦 is 了 and 啊 merged: a lively “something has changed” (下雪啦!). 嘛 presents something as obvious (“…, you know”) or softens a request (别急嘛), and unlike 吗 it never asks a question. 也好 follows a clause to accept a situation, “that’s fine too”, or pairs up as A也好,B也好 “whether A or B”.
下雪啦!
It’s snowing!
好啦好啦,别哭了。
Okay, okay, stop crying.
你不去也好,在家好好休息吧。
It’s fine if you don’t go; get some good rest at home.
水果啦、蛋糕啦、饮料啦,桌上什么都有。
Fruit, cake, drinks: the table has everything.
Common traps
- To ask a yes-no question use 吗: 你去吗?, not 你去嘛?.
- 啦 can’t replace the 了 right after a verb: 我买了三本书, not 我买啦三本书.
- 也好 accepts something that is “not bad either”, so don’t use it for real good news: 你考了第一,太好了!, not 你考了第一也好.
