When to use Nominalizing with 所...的
所...的 creates a noun phrase around what is done, said, seen, or achieved. It is compact and common in formal writing.
我们所取得的成绩来之不易。
The achievements we have obtained did not come easily.
企业所面临的问题越来越复杂。
The problems enterprises face are becoming more complex.
你所看到的只是表面。
What you saw is only the surface.
这正是我们所需要的能力。
This is exactly the ability we need.
Common traps
- 所...的 is formal; not every relative clause needs 所.
- The verb after 所 should be an action that points to an object/result.
- Do not use 所 with every 的 phrase.
