Verb/Adjective + 透了 for “Completely, Through and Through”

Add 透了 after a verb or adjective to say something is complete or extreme: soaked through, fully ripe, really awful.

Pattern

verb / adjective + 透 + 了

透 means “through”; after a verb or adjective it says the state has gone all the way, or is extreme.

下了一场大雨,我的衣服全湿透了。

When to use Verb/Adjective + 透了 for “Completely, Through and Through”

透 originally means “to pass through.” Put it right after a word, then add 了: 湿透了 (wet all the way through), 熟透了 (completely ripe), 黑透了 (completely dark).

西瓜已经熟透了,可以吃了。

The watermelon is fully ripe. We can eat it.

我们到家的时候,天已经黑透了。

By the time we got home, it was completely dark.

这个问题我已经想透了,明天就给你答案。

I’ve thought this question through, and I’ll give you an answer tomorrow.

今天糟糕透了:早上迟到,下午又把钥匙丢了。

Today was awful: I was late this morning, and then I lost my keys this afternoon.

Common traps

  • Put 透 right after the verb or adjective and 了 after 透: 湿透了, not 湿了透.
  • Don’t add 得: 湿得透了 is wrong; say 湿透了.
  • For happy feelings, use 极了 (高兴极了) rather than 透了.

Targeted drill
